Docksiders Lilly Siems Commits to
Docksiders Level 10 Lilly Siems has signed a letter of commitment to Brown University. Though she had many offers from prestigious colleges, she feels she fits best at Brown. The Roland Park Country School Senior had full scholarship offers from Rutgers and George Washington University and was also sought after by both Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. After visiting the different Universities and returning from a recruiting trip to Brown University her decision was made! Lilly chose Brown because she liked both the gymnastics team and the coaches. She is also looking forward to the broad based liberal arts education that Brown offers. Brown University does not offer Athletic Scholarships because it is an Ivy League school, but this did not sway Lilly’s decision to go where she knew she would be able to excel in both gymnastics and her chosen field of study.
At Brown University Lilly is interested in studying biological sciences and international relations. Last summer Lilly attended the National Youth Leadership Forum in Medicine. The 10-day program, which was held at Georgetown University, explored medical ethics, public health, and various other aspects of the medical profession. Lilly received a Heads Commendation last year in school for a chemistry project involving the production of biodiesel fuel. Lilly has also been very active in community service activities, including organizing and sponsoring a fundraiser she called Cartwheels for Katrina which raised over $2,000 for the American Red Cross Disaster fund to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, working at the fitness center in a local nursing home, and participating in activities for the Special Olympics.
In the gym Lilly is an excellent example of dedication and determination. She came to Docksiders as a sophomore in high School who was struggling to be a solid Level 9 gymnast. She was injured half way through the year and was not able to compete the rest of that season. The next year she came back strong as a Level 10 with more determination than ever. She had a great 2006 -2007 season making it to States and Regionals with ease. A fall on a new vault at Regionals cost her a spot at the 2007 Level 10 Junior Olympic Nationals, but she was not discouraged. She had already caught the attention of many college coaches and knew her dream of competing in college was still intact. This season she is putting bigger and better skills into her routines and looking to make Nationals her last year in age group gymnastics.
In addition to gymnastics, Lilly has been swimming with Bolton Hill Barracudas since the age of 5. She qualified and competed in the State Sectional in the butterfly and the breast stroke last summer. Lilly also dances with the Roses, a dance troupe based at Roland Park Country School, and traveled through Italy last year performing with them. She has previously danced in productions of the Nutcracker with the Donetsk Ballet and the Moscow Ballet. In November Lilly debuted with the National Debutante Cotillion in Washington, DC. She celebrated her debut with friends and team mates at a private reception over the holidays.
Docksiders Head Coach Bob Ouellette has often said he wished he had the privilege of working with Lilly for more than just 3 years. She is a very talented and hardworking individual and there is no telling how far she could have gone had she been able to train at the high level offered at Docksiders when she was younger. There is pride in his voice when he speaks of her accomplishments. There have been few gymnasts who have been able to come to Docksiders and “hang”, so to speak, with the strict standards and rigorous practice schedule. Coming from another gymnastics club where their foundation and training habits have already been set takes a tremendous amount of confidence and perseverance. Lilly has been both an incredible surprise and a wonderful asset to our Level 10 team program. We wish her much success in all of her future endeavors. Go Lilly!
