Docksiders Welsh and Ouellette Both Capture 2007 Maryland State All-Around Titles
The 2007 Maryland State Gymnastics
Championships for Levels 9 & 10 was held in Salisbury, Maryland on Sunday April
1st. Even though it was April Fools Day the Docksiders gymnasts
showed up and performed
many fantastic routines that earned them State Champion
status! Krystal Welsh captured her first State All-Around Title in the Junior A
age group with the high score of 38.10. Her Docksiders teammate Stephanie
Ouellette took the All-Around title in the Junior B age group with a score of
37.075. This was Stephanie’s 3rd consecutive year winning the
All-Around title in her age group. This is an honor that no other gymnast in
the state of Maryland has ever achieved. Docksiders Level 10’s took 2nd
place in the team competition, just .4 away from winning the State
Championships.
In the Individual event competition for
the Level 10’s Krystal was named State Uneven Bar Champion with a score of
9.625. She also
finished 2nd on the 3 other events, Vault with a
9.45, Balance Beam with a 9.525, and Floor Exercise with a 9.50. Also in the
Junior A age group Docksider Brianna Guy took State Titles on 3 events. Her
event titles included Vault with a score of 9.50, Balance Beam with a score of
9.60, and Floor Exercise with a score of 9.525. Her All Around score of 37.525
was high enough to earn her 2nd place in the All-Around, just behind
her teammate Krystal. Between the two of them Docksiders gymnasts won all of
the possible titles in this very competitive age group! Both Krystal and
Brianna were also named to the Maryland State Team, which is made up of the
girls with the top 6 All-Around scores regardless of age groups in the entire
competition. Docksider Alexis Gross, also in the Junior A age group, took a 3rd
place finish on Uneven Bars with a score of 9.375. In the Junior B age group
Stephanie Ouellette captured the Floor Exercise Title with a score of 9.45 and
also took 2nd place on Uneven Bars with a score of
9.525. Docksider
Rachel Fincham swung her way to a 9.70 on the Uneven Bars and was awarded the
State Champion title for her high score. Betsy Zander took 2nd place on Balance
Beam with a strong routine that earned her a score of 9.175. Also contributing
to the team’s 2nd place finish were Docksiders Heather Atwood, Lilly
Siems, Melanie Brother, and Sarah Meiklejohn. Docksider gymnasts Courtney
Shelsby, who was injured in the first rotation of the competition, and
Toi Garcia,
who was injured in January, were unable to compete due to their injuries
but were still there to support their team. All 10 girls from the Docksiders
team qualified to the Regional Championships, which will be held at the end of
April at the Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland. Courtney has
been accepted into the Regional Championships on the strength of her scores for
the competition season and should be back in training with plenty of time to
prepare to compete for a chance to qualify to the National Championships. All
of the girls will be battling it out at Regionals to capture a top 7 All-Around
finish and earn a spot on the Region 7 Team at the JO National Championships in
Mason, Ohio in mid-May.
In the Level 9 division Docksider Katie Plummer vaulted her way to Champion status in the Senior B age group with a strong score of 9.225. This is Katie’s second champion title on vault this season and it is her first State Title. Also in the Senior B age group Kayla Della finished in 3rd place on Floor Exercise with a 9.30. This was Kayla’s last State Championships. She will be graduating in May and plans to attend Towson University in the fall. In the Senior A age group Jenna White took 3rd place on Vault with a 9.0 and 3rd place on Floor Exercise with a 9.475. Five out of Docksiders six Level 9 gymnasts qualified to Level 9 Regionals to be held in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania in mid-April.
