Docksiders' Kim
Ouellette releases
children's book
The story, "...Ms. Kim told Me So", is about a 3 year old girl named Natalie and
the relationship she has with her teacher in the gym, Ms. Kim. The book was
released online as of September 7th, 2005.
The story has three central themes. The primary theme
of the story is to show children how much fun gymnastics is, and hopefully to
encourage them to join a class so they can have as much fun as Natalie does in
her class. The book is a photojournalistic documentary of a single days' class
which features an abundance of smiling faces and physical activity.
A second theme reaches out to teachers, coaches, and
instructors. This instructional theme serves as a reminder for developmental
teachers that they have a significant impact on the students they teach. The
book illustrates the mimicking nature of children in the early stages of
learning and reinforces the positive role models that adults provide.
The third theme centers on parents. The objective of
this aspect of the book is to educate parents on the positive impact that
gymnastics can have on their children. Structured, guided physical activity in a
safe and nurturing environment is a prime tool for overcoming the epidemic of
obesity that is growing in this country every year. We are a society driven to
look great and feel fit, yet lifestyle we are allowing our children to adopt is
one that does not lend itself to a positive self image and has a brittle
foundation for fitness.
